Fill up anywhere in Florida this month and you're paying more. AAA's got gas at $4.20 a gallon statewide, up 3.0% from $4.08. That's not a Miami thing or a Jacksonville thing, it's every city on this list, all at once, same number. Budget for it no matter where you're looking.

Miami's the one bright spot on jobs. Unemployment there fell from 3.9% to 3.7%, per BLS, the sharpest drop of any place in the state this period. Everywhere else moved the other way a little. Jacksonville's rate ticked up to 4.9%, Orlando's up to 4.7%, Tampa up to 4.8%, Sarasota up to 5.0%. Small moves, but they're all pointing up except Miami.

Home prices are still drifting down across the board, which is the one piece of good news if you're buying. Jacksonville's median listing price fell 2.6% to $380,000, the steepest drop of the metros. Sarasota's down 2.1% to $465,000, Tampa down 1.9% to $390,000. Rents barely moved anywhere, up a fraction of a percent in Sarasota, Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa, flat in Orlando at $1,942.

So here's the shape of it. Gas costs more everywhere, no exceptions. Miami's got the best jobs story by a wide margin, but it's also got the highest rent on this list at $2,666. Everyone else is holding roughly steady on jobs while listing prices soften a bit. Not a dramatic month, but the gas hike is real money out of your pocket regardless of which city you pick.

How this report is built. Every figure comes from a public series read this week: Zillow’s rent and home value indexes, FRED’s listing price series from realtor.com, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ local unemployment rates, and AAA’s state gas averages. The prose is drafted from those readings and checked number by number against them before it publishes. Unemployment moves are shown in percentage points. Nothing here is a forecast.
